 Welcome to the historical timeline of Zion United Church of Christ in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Our church has a rich and storied past, marked by faith, community, and resilience. From our humble beginnings to our present-day ministry, we have been a beacon of hope and a pillar of strength for generations.

    1870s

    Eastern Synod considered starting a Reformed Church mission in Stroudsburg, PA

    1881

     A number of Reformed Church people folk gathered and received permission to meet in the basement of the Monroe County Courthouse at 7th and Monroe Street forming a Reformed Congregation.  

    1882

    The congregation was formally organized on May 19. On Aug. 6, the Rev. George Kerschner was installed as pastor. During his pastorate, the church building was constructed and named Zion Reformed Church. 

    1883

     Property for church purchased for $750. Cornerstone placed and a Gothic style, stone building of 36 feet by 36 feet with a 42-foot pressed brick front church was built with a seating capacity of 400. Cost was approximately $8,000. 

    1884

    The church building was dedicated on Nov. 16. Kerosene lamps provided light.  

    Early 1900s

     Electric lights were installed. 

    1904 to 1909

      Parsonage built on Green and Monroe Streets.

    1904

     Sunday school chapel was built, and the church auditorium was renovated. 

    1909 to 1916

     The parsonage on Green and Monroe Streets was sold, and another parsonage on North Eighth Street next to the church building was purchased. The Sunday School was completed. 

    1919 to 1928

    The Kimball Pipe Organ was purchased, requiring an addition to the transept to house it.

    1929

     Renovations and the addition of the stained glass window, with a rededication.

    1951

     Extensive renovations were made to Sunday School. 

    1959

    The parsonage had renovations made at the cost of $7,000.

    1960s

    Purchase of a new organ, renovation of church and redevelopment of church school at a cost of $60,000. 

    1970s - 1980s

    Members purchase organ keys at a cost of $25 per key. Members donate for new hymnals. Church runs day care center, a fire alarm system installed, exterior of church covered in brick facing, regular windows replaced, new flashing on steeple, Lexan covering placed on stained glass window for protection, and parsonage sold. 

    2004

    The Peace Garden was installed between the old parsonage building and the left side of the church. Parking spaces were added for staff.

    2007

    New signage at back of church with letters purchased through proceeds from in-house auction, new church doors installed, brass plaques on pews, windowsills lacquered, sidewalk at side of church repaired.
