In 1881, at the annual meeting of the Eastern Synod, a discussion was held on whether it was advisable to start a mission church in Stroudsburg. During that year, a small band of people obtained permission to hold religious services in the local courthouse, situated at 7th and Monroe St. In 1882, the group had grown sufficiently, and permission was granted to form a congregation.
The East Pennsylvania Classis appointed a committee of Revs. Porter, Hibschman and Elder Thomas Miller to assist the organization. Immediately after, the congregation was organized, Rev. George Kerschner was called as the first pastor.
The cornerstone of the church was laid in August 1883. It was recorded that Pastor Kerschner personally selected every piece of wood used in the ceiling construction. The committee in charge of construction consisted of Jacob Shafer, Samuel Hood, H.T. Van Iderstine, J.L. Bowen, and Jerome Williams.
